How much smaller will your image get?

How much you save depends more on what is in the picture than on which tool you use. These are the ranges to expect at the default quality of 60.

An image that has already been compressed once saves much less the second time. Saving a JPG again always costs a little quality, so keep your original.

Which quality setting should you use?

Quality runs from 1 to 100 and starts at 60. It is the one control that matters most.

Setting Best for
90 to 100 Images you will print or edit again later. Near lossless, but the file stays large.
70 to 85 Photos for a website or a portfolio. Hard to tell from the original on a screen.
50 to 70 Email attachments, uploads with a size cap, chat apps. The default sits here.
Below 40 Only when a hard size limit leaves no choice. Edges and gradients start to show blocks.

PNG and WebP images with transparency keep their transparency, and compression never changes the format of your file.

WebP, and when it is worth using

WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 to replace both JPG and PNG. It handles lossy compression like a JPG, lossless compression and transparency like a PNG, and animation like a GIF, all in one format. Every current browser can display it.

Why the files come out smaller

  • It predicts each block of pixels from the blocks already decoded around it and stores only the difference, so smooth areas cost almost nothing.
  • It keeps an alpha channel without falling back to the much heavier PNG encoding.
  • Measured with this tool, a photograph at quality 75 came out about 74% smaller than the same image as JPG, and a screenshot about 79% smaller.

Where WebP fits well

When to stay with JPG or PNG

  • Anything you hand to someone else to open in older software. Photo printers, some desktop editors and older phones still expect a JPG.
  • Photos you plan to edit repeatedly. Every lossy save costs a little quality whatever the format, so keep an original.

Compression runs in your browser, and Safari cannot write WebP files in any version. On Safari a WebP is refused with a message rather than quietly saved in the wrong format. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all work.

Compressing to an exact file size

If an upload form caps you at a number of kilobytes, open Advance Settings and use Max Size rather than guessing at the quality slider. Max Size is set in megabytes, so 0.05 means about 50 KB and 0.1 means about 100 KB. The lowest setting is 0.01, roughly 10 KB.

Set Max Width and Max Height at the same time if the form also limits dimensions. A photo 4000 pixels wide reaches a small size target far more gently if you bring it down to 1000 pixels as well.

Questions

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

Yes, a little, because the compression here is lossy. At the default setting most people cannot see the difference on a screen. Above 90 the loss is very hard to spot, and below 40 it becomes obvious.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs in your browser on your own processor. Your images are never sent anywhere, which is why it keeps working once the page has loaded even without a connection.

Which formats can I compress?

JPG, PNG and WebP. WebP compression needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox, because Safari cannot write WebP files. Other formats, including HEIC and GIF, are skipped for now.

Does this work on a phone?

Yes. Pick images the same way you would attach them to a message. Large batches are slower on a phone because the work happens on the device.

What is the difference between compressing and resizing?

Compressing keeps the same number of pixels and stores them less precisely. Resizing removes pixels, which changes how large the image looks. Max Width and Max Height do the second, and the two work together.
